Michelle Valkanas is a Ph.D. candidate at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, and is a member of the first cohort of NCSE's Graduate Student Outreach Fellowship. Valkanas studies how to use the naturally forming microbial communities found in abandoned mine drainage to remove harmful metals from contaminated watersheds
