"Making the Grade?" in Texas

Smokestack.

Writing in the San Antonio Express-News (October 16, 2020), the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund's Kathy Miller and NCSE's Ann Reid called on the Texas state board of education to "ensure that Texas students learn what the evidence tells us about climate change" as it continues to oversee the revision of the state's science education standards.

In a recent report issued by TFNEF and NCSE — "Making the Grade? How State Public School Science Standards Address Climate Change" — Texas's present science standards received the grade of F of their treatment of climate change. Yet, Miller and Reid observe, "the board so far has not identified climate change as a priority for the teams drafting the new standards."

The Express-News previously covered (October 8, 2020) the release of "Making the Grade?" and subsequently cited the report in its editorial (October 15, 2020) calling for dramatic improvements in "how we teach the science of climate change in our schools." Miller and Reid's column appeared also in the Waco Tribune-Herald (October 10, 2020).
