After a detailed story from WUSF and the Hechinger Report, with commentary from NCSE’s Glenn Branch, revealed new information about Florida's censorship of climate change from its textbooks, a summary was presented on National Public Radio's All Things Considered (September 15, 2016).
Kenneth R. Miller of Brown University, chair of NCSE's board of directors and coauthor of a biology book adopted in Florida, was quoted as saying, "The Florida Department of Education was pressuring publishers to reduce or eliminate coverage of climate change as a condition for getting on the approved list," adding, "We don't want our books to be affected by political considerations. What we care about is what's going on in science."
The NPR piece concluded by noting that there are states that, unlike Florida, are attempting to improve climate change education. "What may be emerging is a two-tiered system where what students learn about climate change depends on what side of a state line they live on."
