Climate change legislation dies in Hawaii

Kauai, Hawaii.

Two bills seeking to support climate change education in Hawaii died in committee on March 7, 2025, when a deadline for bills to pass their house of origin expired.

House Bill 99 sought to require the state department of education to "establish a climate literacy certificate program to prepare high school students in addressing the economic and social impacts of climate change."

House Bill 1491 sought to promote climate education, environmental sustainability, and indigenous knowledge in both the state's K-12 public schools and the University of Hawaii system.

Two resolutions urging the establishment of Climate Week in the state's public schools, House Resolution 81 and the identical House Concurrent Resolution 87, are still active.
